There was plenty of speculation that the 49ers would be appearing on HBO’s Hard Knocks this upcoming season. However, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, that will not be happening. Matt reported early Monday morning that there has been no discussion of the 49ers appearing on the documentary-style show.
There are a few reasons a team is exempt from being selected for the show. Such as: if they have a rookie head coach, have appeared in the playoffs in the last two seasons or have already been on the show within the past 10 years. The 49ers, Raiders, Lions, Redskins and Giants are the teams eligible to be forced to take part, although that has never happened before.
The 49ers have become somewhat of a dark horse media darling recently. They have a boatload of characters on the team — entertaining WRs, the handsome shot-caller under center, and a complete superstar in TE George Kittle. It’s easy to see why many were speculating that they would be selected to appear on the show. I, for one, would actually be happy to see the team behind the scenes as they prepare for a vital season for both the players and the staff.
I know some people are afraid that the cameras can be a distraction for the players. However, the team has had cameras around already, as they have filmed “Brick by Brick” each off-season that Shanahan and Lynch have been at the helm.
If the 49ers make the playoffs this year, this won’t even be possible to speculate over next season. Fingers crossed!
