Now that the 49ers’ 2018 preseason is in the books, it’s sadly that time of the year again where teams are forced to cut down their rosters to only 53 men as we head into week 1.The 49ers have two players that will not count against their roster limits while they serve their suspensions in LB Reuben Foster (2 games) and WR Victor Bolden JR (4 games). So, technically San Francisco will start the season with a 55-man roster, and make the necessary cuts when the suspensions are over. We’ll continue to update this article as more cuts are announced!

Perhaps the most notable name on the list so far is none other than last year’s fourth-round draft pick out of Utah, Joe Williams. As we all remember, reports coming out of the 2017 NFL Draft stated that Kyle Shanahan had to persuade John Lynch & Co. to take a chance on Williams, because they were not sold in the least on him. Unfortunately, they appear to be right. After spending his entire rookie season on IR, the 49ers were desperately needing Williams to show this preseason why he deserved to be taken in the fourth round last season. However, that didn’t happen, as evident by his release.

Another name that might be surprising to see is veteran wide receiver Aldrick Robinson. While he wasn’t going to be putting up any 1,000-yard campaigns anytime soon, Robinson was a special teams Ace and a veteran presence in the locker room. This is the first time in a long time that the 49ers have had a really deep and talented wide receiver group, and having to make some tough calls accompanies that blessing.

Defensive lineman Chris Jones was just brought back not too long ago, but now it appears the team was just looking for bodies to fill in for the majority of that fourth preseason game. Offensive linemen Chris Gonzalez, Pace Murphy, and Darrell Williams looked to be nothing more than camp bodies with the 49ers, but they might get scooped up by another OL-needy team.
