One liner:

49ers’ backups lose turnover battle, and the game, to the Chargers.

Biggest storyline:

In their final preseason game, the 49ers’ backups’ two lost fumbles were probably the difference between the two sides. In a display unsurprisingly marred by individual errors and the inability to finish plays, some of the backups nevertheless performed well enough to suggest they should have a place on the roster moving forwards, notably Ronald Blair and Richie James. Reuben Foster, DJ Jones and Solomon Thomas also showed their quality, whilst the likes of Pita Taumoepenu, Elijah Lee, Tyvis Powell and Antone Exum will have given the coaches a late reminder of their credentials as possible members of the 49ers’ first 53 man roster of the season.

Biggest play:

Nick Mullens’ perfect 27 yard pass down the right sideline to Richie James – two men putting a cherry on top of their good preseasons.
