The 49ers have reportedly signed former Los Angeles Chargers defensive end/outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu to a one year prove it deal, according to his agents.
Attaochu fits the physical profile of a LEO type pass rusher in the 49ers defense, with explosive burst and good length. However, outside of his second season in the NFL, when he recorded 6 sacks and a forced fumble, his production has been underwhelming at best. An injury affected third season where he only recorded 2 sacks was followed by a 2017 during which he was a healthy scratch for much of the season.
This signing therefore represents a small gamble for the 49ers, but a far bigger opportunity for Attaochu. The Niners get to kick the tyres on a toolsy, possible sub-package edge rusher type, whilst the former second round pick gets the chance to try and save his career. He might get a couple more chances based on his physical traits but this represents an outstanding opportunity to latch onto an edge needy team. The 49ers will line Attaochu up and let him go after quarterbacks – it’s on him to show he has what they need in the offseason and then into live action.
