John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan aren’t done with added coaches to their staff just yet. On Wednesday (2/14) Bruce Feldman (FS1/Fox Sports/Sports Illustrated) broke the news that the 49ers had brought on Florida Atlantic University’s defensive coordinator, Chris Kiffin. Kiffin, who is the younger brother of well-known CFB coach Lane Kiffin, is reportedly set to be joining the team as a ‘pass-rush specialist.’
Chris Kiffin has formerly coached the defensive line at first Colorado State, then Arkansas State before joining Florida Atlantic last season as the defensive coordinator.
It’s easy to see why the both sides made this move, as Kiffin transformed FAU’s defense from the 124th ranked to the 37th in the lone season he was there. Also, it’s easy to see why he took the job with San Francisco as well — a foot in the door to the NFL.
We’re definitely all hoping Kiffin can replicate his success at the next level with the 49ers this season
However, it is worth mentioning that while at Ole Miss, he was accused of four NCAA violations. The Sun Sentinel broke down the story and each violation in detail — here. They all are pretty much him covering the students in some way financially, essentially. Just not in the ways that are allowed by the NCAA.
Let us know what you guys think of this addition to the coaching staff!
