So after months of speculation all our mock drafts were accurately inaccurate. I have to admit my surprise when the 49ers selected former Notre Dame Offensive Tackle Mike McGlinchey with the 9th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

On the surface this pick may not appear as exciting as some other names but this was a pick made to improve a team looking to win soon. He brings a mean streak and wonderful run blocking ability which the 49ers badly need. He was given the top run blocking grade for eligible offensive tackles in 2017 (95.0) by PFF.
There is however some development to be made in his pass protection, and if he can do that the 49ers should have found their next great tackle. Speaking of great linemen, Joe Staley, who we all love is still a top bookend but he is thirty-three years old and nearing the end of his career. He will need replacing in the future and this selection displays the progressive thinking of 49ers front office. McGlinchey will go straight into first place in the battle for the starting right tackle spot, as previous incumbent Trent Brown has been traded to the New England Patriots.
49ers are trading OT Trent Brown and pick number 143 overall to the New England Patriots in exchange for pick number 95 overall, per @FieldYates and me. The deal is pending a physical.

This appears a good deal for both sides and it provides John Lynch with added ammunition on the second night of the draft with a few areas still needing investment. We at NothingButNiners would like to wish Trent Brown all the best in his future endeavors. Let’s build our foundation for many Lombardi trophies tonight, GoNiners.
